The British Virgin Islands (Leeward Islands) play a role in the overall postal history of the Caribbean that is much more important than almost any of the other small British islands due to their close proximity to the Danish West Indies, e.g., St. Thomas, which was a major transshipping point for all of the Caribbean postal systems.The exhibit is structured as a classic postal history study with an organization by markings and rates and encompasses the known postal markings used in the British Virgin Islands from 1787 to 1944 as well as all the postal rates applicable in the colony from 1711 through 1944. The markings shown are the most comprehensive examples in one collection of the entire array of BVI postmarks and other ancillary marks ever assembled. It is unlikely to be ever duplicated.The exhibit was first shown in 1988 and then periodically at other national exhibitions over a 15 year period, receiving 9 Gold medals and two Grand Awards. Usually Postal History means the study of rates, routes, and markings of an area or country. But such islands as Montserrat are small enough in every sense of the word that that my exhibit can also cover when various stamps issues as well as postal stationery were introduced, and the political factors that influenced these issues. Thus, the exhibit shows the first mails from and to Montserrat before a formal Post Office was opened in 1790 and then the development of such a separate Post Office within the complex structure of the Leeward Islands Colony. The exhibit finishes with the unusual mail censorship practices of Montserrat during World War II. Although a small island, the broad scope of the period from the 1760’s to 1945 allow Montserrat’s postal history to be a useful model for the development of the postal systems of many of the islands within the British Caribbean area.A note on the availability and scarcity of the material in the exhibit – the literate population in Montserrat was estimated to be 240 in 1881 and dropped in succeeding decades. The exhibit has received nine Gold Medals and two Grand Awards in national competition since it was first shown in 2008.

The Turks and Caicos Islands were truly one of the tiny “backwaters” of the British Empire and even today are still a British Dependent Territory under the ultimate authority of a Governor appointed by London.The obvious postal history implication of this is that commercial mail from the earliest period known- the early 1800’s to the mid-20th Century only exists in very small quantities. Thus, the difficulty of acquisition is extremely high no matter what the price.The exhibit is divided into three chronological periods: 1810 -1899 covering the early and middle Victorian era, 1900-1936 with the late Victorian, Edward VII, and George V eras, and 1937-1945 George VI and World War II. Within each of the three sections postmarks, registration, postal cachets and official mail are shown with the last section also covering wartime censorship.Another great exhibit from Exhibitors Press.
