Description

Montserrat: Postal History of a Caribbean Island (Grand Award Stamp Exhibits) (Volume 3) by Peter P. McCann PhD (Author), Steven Zwillinger (Editor)

Usually Postal History means the study of rates, routes, and markings of an area or country. But such islands as Montserrat are small enough in every sense of the word that that my exhibit can also cover when various stamps issues as well as postal stationery were introduced, and the political factors that influenced these issues. Thus, the exhibit shows the first mails from and to Montserrat before a formal Post Office was opened in 1790 and then the development of such a separate Post Office within the complex structure of the Leeward Islands Colony. The exhibit finishes with the unusual mail censorship practices of Montserrat during World War II. Although a small island, the broad scope of the period from the 1760’s to 1945 allow Montserrat’s postal history to be a useful model for the development of the postal systems of many of the islands within the British Caribbean area.A note on the availability and scarcity of the material in the exhibit – the literate population in Montserrat was estimated to be 240 in 1881 and dropped in succeeding decades. The exhibit has received nine Gold Medals and two Grand Awards in national competition since it was first shown in 2008.
Another great exhibit published by Exhibitors Press
